Innovation driven by demand and innovation driven by invention

Most product designs fall into one of two categories: demand driven innovation or invention driven innovation. [7] Demand pull occurs when there is an opportunity in the market to be explored by the design of a product. [7] This product design attempts to solve a design problem. The design solution can be the development of a new product or the development of a product that is already on the market, such as the development of an existing invention for another purpose. [7] Innovation driven by invention occurs when there is a breakthrough in intelligence. This can happen through research or it can happen when the product designer comes up with a new product design idea. [7]

Expression of product design

So-called "color chips" or color swatches, used in the plastics industry to help designers visually identify the available colors of plastic granules. Design expression comes from the combined effect of all the elements of a product. The tone, shape and size of the color should guide a person's thoughts towards purchasing the product. [8] Therefore, it is in the best interest of the product designer to consider the audiences most likely to be the end consumers of the product. Keeping in mind how consumers will perceive the product during the design process will help the product to be successful in the market. [9] However, even within a specific audience, it is difficult to respond to every possible personality within that group.

One solution to this is to create a product which, in its designed appearance and function, expresses a personality or tells a story. [8] Products that carry such attributes are more likely to exude a stronger expression that will attract more consumers. In this regard, it is important to keep in mind that the expression of the design is not only about the appearance of a product, but also its function. [8] For example, as humans, our appearance as well as our actions are subject to the judgment of people when they make a first impression of us. People don't generally like a rude person, even if they are beautiful. Likewise, a product may have an attractive appearance, but if its function is not continued, it is likely to diminish in the interest of the consumer. In this sense, designers are like communicators, they use the language of the different elements of the product to express something. [10]

Trends in product design

Product designers need to consider all the details: how people use and abuse items, faulty products, mistakes made in the design process, and desirable ways people want to be able to use items. [11] Many new designs will fail and many will not even make it to market. [11] Some models eventually become obsolete. The design process itself can be quite frustrating, typically taking 5 or 6 tries to design the product well. [11] A product that fails the market the first time can be reintroduced to the market two more times. [11] If it continues to fail, then the product is considered dead because the market views it as a failure. [11] Most new products fail, even if there is a good idea behind them. [11]

All types of product design are clearly linked to the economic health of manufacturing sectors. Innovation provides much of the competitive impetus for new product development, with new technologies often requiring a new interpretation of design. It only takes one manufacturer to create a new product paradigm to force the rest of the industry to catch up, fueling new innovations. [12] Products designed to benefit people of all ages and abilities, without penalty to any group, adapt to our aging and growing population by prolonging independence and meeting the changing physical and sensory needs we encounter. all as we get older.
